New Dora Links Doll Hits Shelves Today

The wait is over! Those curious to know what the new Dora Links Doll (compare prices) looks like in real life can get their first peek, as the doll hit shelves today.
Geared at girls ages 5-8, the doll heads up the Dora's Explorer Girls collection that include dolls of Dora's best friends (Naiya, Emma, Kate and Alana), playsets and accessories. All the products, particularly the Dora Links doll, are closely tied into the online community where girls can solve mysteries and play games.
The Dora Links Doll can be customized on the computer and than transforms on the doll itself. Users can her speech, hair length, eye color and jewelry color. And when the site is updated, the doll will let you know.
Mattel totes the doll as being age appropriate and giving parents of growing girls a friendly option from other dolls that might not be suitable. I haven't reviewed the doll yet (one should be coming soon!), but I think it is a smart move and a great idea. Preschoolers still get to play and watch "old" Dora and as they get older, don't have to give her up because she is too "babyish."
But I'm wondering, as a parent, relative or close friend of a preschooler, will you buy the new Dora Links doll for the little one in your life? Take the poll and share your comments below.

It bothers me that we have to have this “older” Dora who’s all about hair and jewelry. Does Dora have to give up being an explorer and start fussing with curling irons and fashion to grow up?
