Twisterz Toys Alphabet Matcher

A weekly look at hot toys being offered this holiday season. Check out our Gift Guide for more.

I'm always on the lookout for fun on-the-go games that will not only keep Mr. S. entertained, but also challenge him as well. Enter Twisterz (compare prices), battery-free, educational toys that help little ones work on early language skills such as spelling, language and reading. Cylindrical in shape, each Twisterz features rotating rings that kids twist and turn to play, depending on which game they choose.

Twisterz Toys Clifford Category Matcher

Mr. S. and I tried the Twisterz Alphabet Matcher  and the Twisterz Clifford Category Matcher. In terms of ease of use, it is clear these toys were designed with little kids in mind. He was able to manipulate everything without any difficulty at all. As for the games, he enjoyed them both.

In the Alphabet Twisterz, kids are supposed to choose a letter and then twist the rings to find five pictures that start with that letter (there are four interchangeable rings for good mixing and matching). At three years old, he's still learning his letter sounds so this toy was a great way for him to practice and make real connections between letters, words and things.

With the Clifford Matcher, the idea is to match images in the correct category, such as sports or food. While he couldn't read the category words, he certainly understood how to find products and put them in the right spot -- shovel and pail go in the beach category for instance. I was definitely pleased with the games on both units--Mr. S. had a lot of fun and definitely took something away from his play.

Twisterz Alphabet Matcher: Good for kids ages 3 and up, suggested price $19.99; Twisterz Clifford Category Matcher: Good for kids ages 4 and up, suggested price $12.99.
