Troubling allegations about a beloved children's television personality.

Kevin Clash, the voice of Sesame Street monster Elmo, has taken a leave of absence from the show in the wake of accusations that he had sex with an underage boy, TMZ is reporting. Clash has denied the charges, but did admit to having a relationship with the accuser who is now 23. He said the relationship did not start until after the accuser was an adult.

"I had a relationship," (with the accuser), Clash reportedly told TMZ. "It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to make it into something it was not."

Sesame Workshop  (the parent company of Sesame Street) released the following statement:

"In June of this year, Sesame Workshop received a communication from a young man who alleged that he had a relationship with Kevin Clash beginning when he was 16-years-old. This was a personal relationship, unrelated to the workplace. We took the allegation very seriously and took immediate action."

According to TMZ, Sesame Workshop executives said they conducted an investigation and "determined the allegation of underage sex was unsubstantiated." Sesame Workshop officials also told TMZ that Elmo "is bigger than any one person and will continue to be an integral part of Sesame Street."
