5 Ways to Exercise with Kids

There is no getting around this hard, cold, fact: there are 24 hours in the day. Not 25, not 27, and not 30. So as much you would like there to be more time to get everything you need to get done done, the reality is there is only 24 hours to do it in. In particular for busy moms, trying to find time to exercise between everything you do all day -- running errands, preschool pickup/drop off, making dinner, and everything else that needs to get done -- seems like an impossible task. But it doesn't have to be, especially when you consider how important exercising is to your physical and mental well-being. Here's how to exercise with kids.

1. Set a Reasonable Goal

While your ideal workout may involve 45 minutes on the treadmill followed by some weights, chances are that probably isn't going to happen if you've got a little one at home with you. 2. Be Creative

Sometimes as parents we have to make do with limited resources. This is especially true for finding time. So make the most of what you have. Going shopping with your little one? Park in the (safest) spot furthest away from the mall. At the mall and need to get to the second floor? Use the stairs instead of the escalator. 3. Take What You Can Get

Did you start a routine on your workout DVD only to be interrupted by your little one 15 minutes into it? Disappointing, yes, but the exercise you did still counts. 4. Choose Short Workouts

5. Involve Your Kids

You know a great thing about preschoolers? They have lots and lots of energy! So rather than try to carve out alone time to exercise, ask your little one to be your new workout buddy! 6. Other Tips for Squeezing in a Workout

Still having trouble getting that workout in? Try talking to your little one about why you want to exercise. Explain how healthy it is for you to spend some time each day being active. Then, when it is time for you to start your routine, tell your little one what you are about to do. So she knows it's only temporary, try setting a timer for when you expect to be done, that way she can countdown. Make sure she has something to do and plenty of snacks and water so she won't interrupt you with calls of "I'm (hungry) (thirsty) (bored)!"
