3 at the time, 6 now for my daughter and my son is 3 and in the preschool
Are there lots of schools in your area to choose from?
Yes. At least 20 in a ten-square mile radius.
How many/what programs did you seriously consider?
One in a daycare and one in our school district.
What type of preschool program did you choose?
A preschool through our church. I don't know if there is a specific type to categorize it in but while the kids do learn academics it is more about learning to socialize.
Why did you choose this program?
I did not want my kids to feel any pressure at preschool, they have enough time for that later on! We chose a place that felt warm and friendly to us. It isn't the most modern, they don't have computers, but they do go outside and they teach kids to be kind. That was important to us. We wanted a place where our kids would make friends and learn how to socialize.
Advice
- Trust your instincts. We had friends who said we were crazy for not sending our kids to a place that didn't focus on academics -- that they wouldn't be ready for kindergarten, but that didn't feel right to us.
- Make sure you can afford whatever place you choose ahead of time.
