From the article: What Your Child Shouldn't Bring to Preschool
There are plenty of items that your child needs to bring to school, but there are many that they shouldn't. What are some things you recommend that kids leave at home? Share Your Top Tips
Candy
- Some schools have rules against any candy. But even if it's allowed, take it easy. Maybe one small treat. Kids are unlikely to get as much out of school if they are on a sugar high. Plus it can be divisive when some kids are doling out candy to the kids they like.

Medicine!
- When I was teaching, I can't tell you how many times a child would have an inhaler or other medicine in their backpack. Sometimes it was because the parent forgot to sign it in with the school office, but other times it was a Friday and it was a bag FULL of different meds to go to the parent's house who had visitation that weekend. It's dangerous, though, and is quite likely against the school's rules or the state's licensing standards. Kids go through other kids backpacks. They're easily accessible and usually hanging in cubbies that are not locked down. Plus, a 3-year-old is just not ready to be responsible for their own medicine yet.

Watch out for penny pinchers
- Our preschool recently posted signs reminding parents not to let kids come to school with loose change in their pockets (major choking hazard). I know my kids love to squirrel away coins they find on the ground so this is an important one to watch out for.
